Controversy Four-year Suspension Over Doping Violation in 2017
In July 2017, she was handed a four-year ban after testing positive in dope test four times during that year, first at the Asian Grand Prix meet in Jinhua, China (24 April), followed by the Federation Cup in Patiala (1 June), Asian Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar (6 July), and the Inter-State championships in Guntur (16 July). She tested postive for steroid Metenolone Jinhua. In the other three meets in India, she tested positive for the stimulant dimethylbutylamine, a substance that has an almost similar structure as the more famous methylhexaneamine. She stood first in all these meets. As a consequence, she had to forfeit her gold medals and national record including her national record of 18.86m at Jinhua. Manpreet’s lawyers argued that while training at the Railway facility, Patiala in April, a kabaddi player from the Railways named Pradeep brought along an outsider named Gopal (also a kabaddi player) into the facility. Manpreet alleged that she had an argument with Gopal one day, following which she deliberately sabotaged Manpreet’s drink. Her lawyers also argued that Manpreet was in the Registered Testing Pool of the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) of the International Association of Athletics Federation and was regularly tested and had an unblemished record. However, NADA argued that Manpreet had failed to establish how the prohibited substance entered her system, observing that the athlete’s allegation of a ‘sabotage’ of her drink amounted to a “weak state of evidence.” [4]FirstPost
