4 lakh jobs created in Q3 of 2021; at 39%, manufacturing largest employer

NEW DELHI: Formal sector employment in India rose by 4 lakh in the quarter ending December 2021, with the manufacturing sector emerging as the largest employer, according to the third Quarterly Employment Survey report released by the labour ministry on Thursday.
The third Quarterly Employment Survey (QES), which captured employment data from establishments with 10 or more workers spanning manufacturing, construction, trade, transport, education, health, accommodation and restaurants, IT/ BPOs and financial services sectors, accounted for about 85% of the total employment in units with 10 or more workers.
In these sectors, employment grew to 3.14 crore, higher than the employment estimates of 3.1 crore recorded in the second QES during July-September 2021, and 3.08 crore as per the first round of QES during October-December, 2020.
“Happy to inform the report on 3rd Round (Oct-Dec, 2021) of Quarterly Employment Survey shows a rising trend in employment in organised sector, employing 10 or more workers, of the selected 9 sectors,” labour and amployment minister Bhupender Yadav said in a tweet.
According to the report, the manufacturing sector accounted for around 39% of the estimated total number of workers, followed by the education sector at 22%.
The IT/BPOs sector followed with 11% employees, health with 10.4%, trade accounting for 5.3%, and transport for 4.2% employees. The financial services accounted for 2.8% of the employment pie, accommodation and restaurants for 2.6% of the share, and construction, the lowest contributor, at 2% of the workforce.
