Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 in Rameswaram, Dhanushkodi, Tamil Nadu to a Muslim family. His father Zainul Abideen was a sailor and his mother Ashima was a homemaker. Dr. A. P.J. Abdul Kalam’s full name is Abul Pakir Zainulabadin Abdul Kalam. These were a total of five siblings, three elder brothers and one elder sister.

Abdul Kalam’s father was not very educated and for this reason his father used to run his house with the money he gave to his fishermen, due to which he and his family had to face many problems.

Due to this reason, Abdul Kalam started distributing newspapers from house to house and used to pay his school fees with those money, he got only poverty in inheritance. During school days, Kalam was normal in studies, but was always ready and willing to learn new things. He had a hunger for learning and he used to concentrate on his studies for hours.
He did his schooling from Schwartz Higher Secondary School and then attended St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirapalli, from where he graduated in 1954 in physics. He then moved to Madras in the year 1955 from where he studied aerospace engineering. In the year 1960, Kalam completed his engineering studies from Madras Institute of Technology.
After completing his studies, Kalam had only one dream, but to become a fighter pilot, he wanted to make him some jumbo, then went to Dehradun for an Air Force interview. There came 9th place out of 25 candidates interviewed. While the need was 8 candidates.
Kalam then moved to Delhi and after that he joined the DRDO as a scientist and initially he contributed to the small helicopter design.
Being a part of the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR), he got an opportunity to work with great scientists of India like Vikram Sarabhai. In 1969 he was sent to ISRO where he served as Project Director.

In 1980 the Government of India thought of starting a modern missile program with Abdul Kalam ji Direction, so he again sent it to DRDO. Thereafter Integrated Guided Missile Development Program -IGMDP was launched as the Chief Executive of Kalam ji. On the instructions of Abdul Kalam ji, it was successful to build a missile like Agni missile, Prithvi.
As a scientist and engineer, he worked on several important projects of Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).
He also played a key role in the 1998 Pokhran II nuclear test. Dr. Kalam was also involved with India’s space program and missile development program. For this reason, he is also called ‘Missile Man’.
He was honored with several prestigious awards including Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. On 18 July 2002, APJ Abdul Kalamji took the presidency. Kalam ji has never been associated with politics, yet he remained the supreme President of India.

He died on 27 July 2015 in Shillong, Meghalaya. Here he went to give a college lecture. Famous scientist Abdul Kalam was lecturing at IIM Shillong when he suffered a heart attack, he was rushed to the hospital, but regretted that the team of doctors could not save him.

After his death, on 28 July, he was brought to Delhi from Shillong in Meghalaya, where he was kept in the house of Delhi to see the common man. Here all the big leaders came and paid homage to them. He was then taken to his village by Airbus. Kalam ji was cremated on 30 July 2015 near his ancestral village Rameswaram.
