Gautham Karthik was born on Tuesday, 12 September 1989 (age 33 years; as of 2022) in Madaras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu. Gautham did his schooling at Herbon International School, Ooty, Tamil Nadu, a boarding school. Gautham, during an interview, talked about his experience of studying in a boarding school. He said,
Since I studied in a Christian Convent in Ooty and was put up in a hostel, I couldn’t spend Diwali with my family in Chennai. The hostel also had a ‘no crackers’ rule, so we used to just sit and watch the fireworks in Ooty from the hostel. After coming to Chennai, Diwali has become a memorable family affair. It’s a new experience for me. This Diwali would be ‘Mersal’.”

After completing his schooling in 2008, Gautham enrolled at Chris University, Bangalore (now Bengaluru), where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Psychology, and English.

One half of this is true. I have two wives. My first wife, Ragini has two children, Gautam and Kayan. My second wife is Rathi. She has a son, Dheeran, who is 1 year old. Rathi is Ragini’s younger sister.It is true that there occurred problems between Ragini and me when I married Rathi. However, she did not leave me and go to Ooty. She went to Ooty to put her children in a good school. As of now, we do not have any problem. We are happy. My first son Gautam wants to become a Cinema Hero. Ours is not a great love story. I proposed to Manjima and she took two days to agree. Now, we have decided to get married. Our families are extremely happy with our decision.”

Career

In 2013, Gautham Karthik made his acting debut with Mani Ratnam’s film Kadal in which he played the lead role of Thomas; however, the Tamil film Kadal flopped. In an interview, Gautham Karthik talked about his experience of working in Tamil film and said,
Everybody thought the film would be a big hit and I would become a star overnight. Unfortunately, it didn’t do as well as we expected although there are people who loved it. But I learnt a lot about the process of making a film. For instance, Rajeev Menon would talk to me in detail about camera angles, lenses and about how to light a frame. While I was dubbing for the film, Mani Ratnam would tell me how he was going to edit the film. In hindsight, I think I got a lot out of the film.”

In 2014, Gautham worked on the Tamil film Yennamo Yedho, a remake of the Telugu film Ala Modalaindi (2011). Subsequently, he has appeared in various Tamil films like Rangoon (2015), Indrajith (2017), Oru Nalla Naal Paathu Solren (2018), Anandham Vilayadum Veedu (2021), and Yutha Satham (2022).

Controversy

In 2017, Gautham Karthik was slammed by a section of netizens after he made a comment related to South Indian actor Rajnikanth’s political journey. According to sources, Gautham talked about Rajnikanth and said he should stick to films and refrain from entering politics. However, according to Gautham, his comment was misinterpreted by Rajnikanth’s fans. Later, he posted a video on Twitter to clarify his statement about actor Rajnikanth. In the video, Gautham said,

There is a controversy doing the rounds based on a recent statement of mine. I would like to say that it’s a complete misunderstanding. I was asked if I supported Rajinikanth Sir’s entry into politics. To which I replied I didn’t understand politics and that I would like to see him only as a superstar. But, my statement has been taken out of context and has been misconstrued as I didn’t support his entry. I am here only to be part of films and I love watching Rajinikanth Sir’s films.”
