Some Lesser Known Facts About Lovepreet Singh

  • Lovepreet Singh first developed an interest in weightlifting when he was 13 after watching a bunch of kids in his locality lifting weights. However, for Lovepreet, who grew up watching his father sew garments in his store outside their two-room village residence, lack of money was the biggest obstacle which stood his weightlifting career.
  • When Lovepreet was in class eight senior weightlifters from his village Heera Singh and Rupinder Singh started training him. While Heera Singh is a weightlifting coach, Rupinder Singh is in CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force)
  • He has been participating in weightlifting events since his school days at D.A.V.
  • Lovepreet’s family has a humble background with a tailor father and vegetable seller grandfather who earned scanty incomes. To supplement his father’s meagre income, Lovepreet started working with wholesale vegetable vendors in Amritsar mandi via which he sustained his weightlifting dream. The hectic job required him to reach Mandi by 4 am, rush back home by 6 am, get ready, and leave for training. In an interview, his father while recalling Lovepreet’s struggles said,
My income was not enough and he knew that. So, he started working part time at Amritsar vegetable mandi. He used to earn around Rs 300 per day which he used to spend on his diet and other requirements.”
His father also shared that they did not even renovate their shabby house as a big portion of their income was spent on Lovepreet’s requirements for weightlifting.
  • Apart from lending a hand to his grandfather in selling vegetables, Lovepreet also worked as a Ghodiwala at weddings, chauffeuring around the groom’s mare.

He appeared in the Indian Navy trials and got selected. He has been working as Havildar there for more than five years now. That helped him and us a lot.”

Harpreet also revealed that their grandfather and uncles used to pool in money to make sure Lovepreet continued with his weightlifting training.

  • After seven years of hard work and determination, he was inducted into the national camp in Patiala.
  • He is a member of the Chandigarh Amateur Weightlifting Association.
  • At the 2021 IWF World Championships, he ranked 12th in the 109 kg weight category with a total lift of 348 kg, with 161 kg in snatch and 187 kg clean & jerk.
  • Lovepreet Singh’s bronze medal was India’s second-ever medal in an over-100kg weightlifting category at the Commonwealth Games after Pardeep Singh’s silver in the 105kg, which he earned at Gold Coast 2018.
  • After lifting the weight of 163kg in the snatch round during the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Lovepreet Singh did Sidhu Moose Wala‘s signature ‘thigh-five’ to celebrate. Fans of the late singer believed that Lovepreet had given a tribute to Moose Wala, who was killed in broad daylight in Punjab’s Mansa district on 29 May 2022. While addressing the media he said,
It is called a Punjabi thaapi (the thigh-five). It is my way of showing respect to my favourite singer.”
He also revealed that he was listening to the song ‘So High’ by Moosewala before the lift.
