Tripura CM Biplab Deb resigns | India News

NEW DELHI: In a surprise development, Biplab Kumar Deb on Saturday said he has resigned as the chief minister of Tripura.
The BJP leader submitted his resignation to governor Satyadev Narayan Arya.
After meeting the governor, Deb said he is following the instructions of the party which wants him to work to strengthen the organisation.
The BJP legislature party is expected to meet later on Saturday to elect its new leader after Deb’s resignation.
Senior leaders Bhupender Yadav and Vinod Tawde have been appointed as observers for the election of the new legislature party leader.
Deputy chief minister Jishnu Dev Varma, who is related to the erstwhile Tripura royal family, is expected to take charge in the interim, sources said.
On Thursday, Deb had visited New Delhi to meet Union home minister Amit Shah and BJP president JP Nadda for a confabulation on the party’s affairs in the northeastern state.
Deb’s resignation comes amid rumours of infighting within the BJP’s state unit.
Elections are due in the northeastern state in 2023.
